Qantas Distribution Surcharge Policy

Distribution Surcharges apply to some Qantas bookings made by travel agents.

The Qantas Distribution Surcharge is applicable per Qantas marketed flight segment on tickets issued globally on or after 1 July 2025. This is irrespective of validating carrier, and subject to applicable laws, government and regulatory approvals. 

The Qantas Distribution Surcharge is automatically priced and collected through a YR fee at the time of ticket issue at the below amounts, based on the Point of Sale (POS). The amount is converted to local currency based on the Bank Selling Rate (BSR) on the day the ticket is issued.

Qantas reserves the right to review the terms, conditions and amount of the Qantas Distribution Surcharge from time to time, which may result in changes to the Qantas Distribution Surcharge value. Application of the Qantas Distribution Surcharge

The Qantas Distribution Surcharge Fee is applicable to QF-marketed itineraries that are booked and/or ticketed by an agent that is ticketing via EDIFACT GDS or via Standard NDC (SNDC) through a GDS Technology Partner. 

The Distribution Surcharge is applicable:

  1. Per Qantas flight segment on Qantas marketed flights. (a Qantas marketed flight is any flight with a Qantas ‘QF’ flight number)
  2. For each booking ticketed on or after 1 July 2025
  3. For each booking ticketed prior to 1 July 2025 that is reissued on or after 1 July 2025, except if the ticket is reissued due to an involuntary disruption or schedule change
  4. Irrespective of the ticket stock used and/or validating carrier
  5. At the time of ticketing regardless of fare type, booking class or cabin
  6. To all passenger types (adult and child) excluding infants without a seat

Qantas Distribution Surcharge Exceptions

  • Tickets that are issued through Qantas direct booking channels
  • Tickets issued via the Qantas Distribution Platform Portal (QDPp)
  • Tickets that are issued via Premium NDC or via Standard NDC through a non-GDS Technology Partner
  • Group bookings that are quoted, booked and ticketed using the Qantas Groups Travel website
  • Bookings made by a travel agent where the booking agent and ticketing agent is a Premium NDC Agent or Standard NDC using non GDS Technology Partners
  • Bookings where the origin and destination (fare break points) of the international fare are part of the Qantas and Emirates Joint Coordination Agreement (JCA)
  • Point of Sale (POS) China/Hong Kong/Macau for journeys commencing (POC) in China/Hong Kong/ Macau
  • oneworld fare products (oneworld Explorer, Global Explorer and Circle Pacific fares) 
  • Tickets combining half return fares to create an EH/AP (RTW) journey (to/from UK/ Europe via Asia in one direction and via North/ South America in the other)
  • Infants without a seat
  • Domestic Australian Resident fares.
  • Local Fare Scheme fares to/from Weipa (WEI) and Horn Island (HID)
  • Electronic Miscellaneous Documents or any other airline miscellaneous document.

Disclaimer:^^ For regions where the Qantas Group Travel Website is not available, Group bookings will continue to be made and ticketed by an agent’s local Qantas Office. If a Group booking is claimed and ticketed by an agent in EDIFACT, the Qantas Distribution Surcharge will apply.

Pricing, Ticketing and Collection

  • The Qantas Distribution Surcharge is displayed/quoted automatically at the time of pricing and is collected at the time  ticketing at the relevant level
  • The Qantas Distribution Surcharge is based on the surcharge applicable at the time of ticketing irrespective of when the original booking was made
  • The Qantas Distribution Surcharge is part of the total amount of the ticket and is displayed in the Ticket Tax box as per any other taxes, fees, levies and charges payable
  • Accounting, invoicing and BSP/ARC processes are identical to all other taxes shown on the ticket
  • No discounts or reductions will be applied to the Qantas Distribution Surcharge
  • Base commission, if applicable, may be claimed.

Qantas Distribution Surcharge Refunds

The Qantas Distribution Surcharge is fully refundable on any unused Qantas marketed flight segments or completely unused tickets, regardless of whether the fare is refundable. Please refer to the Qantas Refund Policy for further information about applying for a refund.

The Qantas Distribution Surcharge cannot be refunded in cases where a passenger is uplifted on another airline as a result of an involuntary disruption (provided the alternative flight on another airline is accepted by or on behalf of the passenger).  If the alternative flight is not accepted by the passenger, Qantas will provide a full refund of the ticket, including the Qantas Distribution Surcharge, where required.  Please refer to our Schedule Change and Disruption Policy for further information.
