Discover Hobart

Nestled at the foothills of Kunanyi/Mt Wellington, Hobart is a place of rare natural beauty that combines heritage charm and modern delights with ease. With award-winning restaurants, historic markets, breath-taking scenery and some of the world's most exciting art and culture on display, it's no wonder that iconic travel guide Lonely Planet lists Hobart as one of the top ten places to visit in the world right now.

So what are you waiting for? Explore this southern city in style with a Qantas Holidays package, and let us take you on a getaway to remember.

What are the must-see attractions in Hobart?

The second oldest capital city in Australia after Sydney, Hobart and Tasmania's European history has thankfully moved on from the brutality of its origins as a penal colony to become a more welcoming destination of international significance.

Once seen by many on the mainland as a cultural backwater, Hobart has emerged into one of the world's most vibrant artistic communities, due in no small part to MONA - the Museum of Old and New Art that sits on the banks of the Derwent River.

The brainchild of museum owner, founder and general iconoclast David Walsh, MONA is perhaps best described as a temple to secularism, rationalism and humour. MONA showcases Walsh's own art collection that spans everything from Egyptian antiquities to a working model of the digestive tract, and invites audience interaction unlike any museum in the world today. Step back in time and explore Salamanca Place, either by wandering through the cafes, restaurants and shops hidden in original 1830s sandstone warehouses or waiting until Saturday to explore the renowned Salamanca Market.

If you're there between Christmas and New Year, you'll be in the right place to welcome the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race fleet end their journey at Constitution Dock. Fancy something more serene? Then bring a picnic and take a walk in the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens on the riverfront - the perfect place to relax.

Hobart is also the starting point for many iconic Tasmanian trips, including exploring Bruny Island, the Freycinet Peninsula and Port Arthur, so whether you're staying put or planning on exploring more of the island, there's no better place to start your adventure than Hobart.
