There’s no shortage of old-world charm in Orange so, if you’re looking for accommodation with a rustic, country feel to it, you’re in luck. Old Convent which is set on a large property has three separate refurbished buildings, one of which was the convent that housed Mary MacKillop, Australia’s only saint. It also has fantastic views of the beautiful Mount Canobolas. Alternatively, the Black Sheep Inn is a cosy option. Guests can stay in refurbed wool shearers cabins. In May celebrate the inaugural Rainbow City Festival or The Orange Winter Fire Festival, August, is a bonfire-lit party, guaranteed to smoke out those winter blues. October rings in the Orange Wine Festival which showcases the very best wine the region has to offer. In between the chaotic festival months, there are wineries to tour, restaurants to dine in and countryside to frolic in.

Food and drink

Orange is all about the wine, so make sure you do a tour of some of the region’s funky wineries. Head over to See Saw wines and enjoy a prosecco or expand your flavour palette at Swinging Bridge Winery. After touring the wineries, stop off for a nightcap at Chesterfield’s, a small bar nestled above Hotel Canobolas.

For worthy grub visit the Agrestic Grocer for a comprehensive taste of Orange. The café showcases cheese made on-site as well as jams and preserves. For dinner head to Charred (pictured) for a wood-fired degustation. Think small plates of smoky meats and local veg, fruit and cheese.

Head into town for a little retail therapy. We love The Sonic, a quirky concept store that sells various lifestyle and clothing brands. From Sass and Bide to local artists and all manner of homewares, you’re bound to find your new favourite piece at The Sonic.

Just a stone’s throw away is the family-run Hawkes General Store. Housing everything from women’s clothing to bright homewares, this store has been an Orange staple for 42 years.

Getting around

From the airport: Orange Airport is located 15km from the city centre with a short 15 minute drive to the the centre of town.

In and around the city: Orange is just under four hours away from Sydney by car and five hours by scenic train. We also can fly you there in just 50 minutes. It’s pretty easy to make your way around Orange. You can drive around the vineyards, rent a bike for a bit of exercise or book a vineyard tour with Vine Venture Tours.
