Miami Beach

It’s all about the beach in Miami. Visit South Beach for unrivalled people watching opportunities and its iconic nightlife. To the north, glitzy Bal Harbor is a getaway for the rich and famous, while surfers like the breaks off Haulover Beach. If you want to get away from it all, try 85th Street Beach or Virginia Key on Key Biscayne. 

Design District and Wynwood

North of Downtown, this newly modish neighbourhood has developed a great vibe as artists seek refuge from expensive South Beach. The Design DistrictOpens external site in a new window and WynwoodOpens external site in a new window offers a eclectic collection of design showrooms, art galleries, craft workshops and shops, along with cafes and restaurants. And there’s a new bar scene developing, too, with speakeasies serving rum punches and whiskey along with bars that specialise in craft beers.

Downtown

DowntownOpens external site in a new window is mostly a conglomeration of business district, construction zone and ghetto, but the area area around Flagier Street has some interesting features which include the historic district which features dozens of 1920s buildings.

The Biscayne Corridor that runs along Biscayne Boulevard from 14th to 71st is transitioning, with interesting cafes, boutiques and bars sitting side by side with seedy flophouses and strip joints. 

Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Little Havana

Coral GablesOpens external site in a new window is a planned city dating back to the Florida land boom of the 1920s, featuring Mediterranean style architecture, luxuriant gardens, the University of Miami, and the Venetian Pool.

South of Little Havana and Downtown, Coconut GroveOpens external site in a new window runs along Biscayne Bay. Just to the north, you’ll find the waterfront Vizcayne Museum and Gardens.

Little Havana

Cuban exiles settled here in the 1950s and '60s, but these days Little HavanaOpens external site in a new window has an overall Latin vibe as Nicaraguans, Guatemalans and Puerto Ricans have moved into the area west of Brickell and Downtown.

Miami has a tropical monsoon climate with hot and humid summers and short, warm winters. Highs are usually 21-26°C. June is the wet season as it sees the most rainfall. Winter features mild to warm temperatures and can drop as low as 10°C. Florida is located within the hurricane belt and is at risk for hurricanes and tropical storms from June to December. 

 

 

Getting around

From the airport

The cheapest and fastest way to get into Miami from the international airport is via the Metrorail, taking passengers to South Beach in under 30 minutes. You can also get into town using a supershuttle, taxi or a convenient arrival transferOpens external site.

In and around the city

Once you are in town, Miami-Dade County is serviced by a Metrorail (train), buses and the free Metromover (monorail). If you like to do things at your own pace try a hop-on-hop-off bus combined with a Go Miami CardOpens external site.

Taxis are available at designated ranks around the city or can be hailed on the street in South Beach. Taxis can be booked for pick-ups at a designated location.
