Hunter valley vineyard

A 4-day wine tour of New South Wales

Sydney - Orange

There are hundreds of wineries to experience around New South Wales, but if you just want a flavour of some of the best drops around, the Hunter Valley (just over a two-hour drive north of Sydney) and Orange are the places to start.

Days 1 - 2: Sydney

In the city bars, you’ll likely be spoiled with a selection of Australia’s best reds, whites and sparkling, but venture into the wider regional areas and you’ll find cellar doors offering an experience like nowhere else. Just over a two-hour drive north, the Hunter Valley is often cited as the nation’s most popular wine destination and the perfect day trip out of Sydney.

Our recommendations

  • Go for a long lunch in Lovedale
Kickstart your trip with a visit to the Lovedale Smokehouse, where you can enjoy a platter of cured meats accompanied by delightful drops of Semillon, Chardonnay, Temperanillo and Shiraz.

  • Enjoy a scenic drive through the region's largest town and embrace the spontaneity of dropping into any of the charming wineries you might pass by, or even the Hunter Valley Zoo.

  • Enjoy local produce in Pokolbin
You’ll find most of the Hunter’s best wineries here, including the largest one at Brokenwood. It’s also well worth a trip to Muse, a two-hatted restaurant whose seasonal menu is constantly changing.

Days 2 - 4: Orange

Australia’s highest wine region is nestled at the base of Mount Canobolas, an extinct volcano that provides fertile soil for over 60 wineries. Take a tour of the gorgeous landscapes and enjoy a variety of rustic cellar doors, vineyard strolls and scenic picnic spots.

Our recommendations

  • Nestled between orchards, olive groves and rolling hills you’ll find some of Australia’s most charming wineries. Opt for ones that pair the wine with cured meats and local cheeses for a real taste of the good life.
  • Take a vino to go
Sampling can be a lot of fun, but once you’ve found that perfect drop, why not stock up and head into the countryside for a picture-perfect picnic?
  • Soar above the vineyards
As the hot air balloon capital of Australia, Orange offers the perfect place to relax with a glass of sparkling as you take to the skies for panoramic views of all the vineyards in the region.
