You’ll easily do away with boredom while staying at Auckland’s The Grand by SkyCity in the centre of downtown. Part of the enormous SkyCity complex and its wealth of restaurants, bars, slot machines and rotating roster of entertainment happenings, this chic inner-city hotel has all of this at its feet – and some pretty impressive views from its windows. Read on for the full review.
Where is The Grand by SkyCity?
The hotel is across the road from SkyCity, on the other side of Federal Street in the centre of downtown Auckland. It takes just under 30 minutes to reach the airport by car.
What’s near The Grand by SkyCity?
Even if you’re not a high roller, SkyCity remains a flame for the moth masses. From fine-dining restaurants to the Sky Tower that reaches 186 metres into the heavens above it, there’s something for everyone in this city entertainment galaxy.
The incredible Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is also in this part of town, hosting a collection of 15,000 art pieces from around the world and within New Zealand.
Although simple, the black-accented rooms do so much right, from rain showers to Nespresso machines and small workstations. Harbour View rooms are the ones you want, offering glances of the pretty water and the clustering city that surrounds. The Presidential Suite is a leap in luxury, boasting an enormous infinity bathtub, dining table for 10 and a wall of picture windows that throws views all the way to the Waitemata Harbour and beyond.
Restaurants and bars
There are more than 20 restaurants and bars within the SkyCity complex, from the hatted sushi joint Masu by Nic Watt (on the lower floors of The Grand) to the incredible Chinese restaurant Huami across the road, where char siew pork uses local manuka honey as its sweetener. There’s also the revolving Orbit atop the Sky Tower some 300 metres in air, that does a full revolution every hour to a menu of crowd-pleasers such as pan-roasted Akaroa salmon and seared scallops.
Travel for work
Level seven houses the hotel’s meeting and conference space, with an attached outdoor terrace. There are three spaces that can be combined in various configurations, accommodating up to 350 people. There’s also a business centre, and all hotel room types have space for remote working.
Spa, gym and pool
Tick, tick and tick: The Grand has the ultimate wellness triad covered. The dimmed lights of East Day Spa signals an immediate directive to unwind, continuing through to treatments that span brow shaping and massages. (There’s also a Vichy shower for some hydrotherapy.)
The other site for therapy would be the 25-metre indoor heated pool, sauna and, if it’s your kind of remedy, the 24-hour fitness centre.
Common areas are accessible to disabled travellers and there are a number of accessible rooms, inclusive of features for guests with visual and hearing impairments.
There’s a wide-reaching commitment from the SkyCity Group to sustainability, including an 81 per cent reduction in waste sent to landfill since 2015. The company also received zero carbon status thanks to offsets and EV chargers have been installed in the hotel’s carparks.
