Heath Ceramics was started by Edith and Brian Heath in 1948, and has gone on to develop some of the most moreish modernist ceramic-ware money can buy. Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey have owned it since 2003 and they have continued Edith’s classic lines as well as her business model of small-scale and sustainable production. It has been based in Sausalito since the 1950s and you can get the ferry across for the free and interesting factory tour, which means you also get to go crazy in the second shop at the showroom.

In the Mission it recently opened a showroom at 2900 18th Street. Most conveniently, though, you’ll find it in the Ferry Building Marketplace. The Ferry Building also has an awesome range of food stores and restaurants (including great seafood). If you go on a Saturday wander the Farmer’s Market and marvel at the extraordinary range of Californian produce.
