How many Indian-California fusion restaurants have received a Michelin star five years running? Well, this one, at least. Part of the Taj Compton Place Hotel complex, it houses a less-expensive bistro to one side. The bistro serves more standard American food, though it’s still good, while the restaurant features Indian-Californian fusion from chef Srijith.

Though it does emphasise “Californian” seasonal produce, the Indian spices including chilli are still given full range. The Spice Route menu is recommended if you are up for splurge – at dinner the restaurant is prix fixe. The decor includes light fittings by Nicholas Weinreib but is otherwise restrained. The atmosphere is old-fashioned, almost eccentric, rather than contemporary and vibrant – which to our mind can make for a romantic evening. Vegetarian menus are also available and there are business menus at lunchtime.


The Union Square area is one of the tourist centres of San Francisco – close to good shops, public transport, business convention centres, the Financial District and Chinatown.
