If you happen to be a Jack Kerouac fan then, boy, do we have a boutique bohemian hotel for you. The On the Road scribe himself stayed here — and wrote two stories — during its previous incarnation as Marlton House. Solo travellers and couples (or really close friends) will get the most enjoyment out of this scene-y Greenwich Village hotspot, as the rooms are quite tiny, even by New York standards. But what it lacks in space, The Marlton more than makes up for in the excellent cocktail bar and restaurant, Margaux, a favourite of the fashion set. There’s also a buzzy espresso bar and a cosy fireplace that makes winter in New York a touch less frigid. Breakfast is complimentary but in this neighbourhood, you’re definitely not lacking for culinary options.
To experience the epitome of downtown living, stay in Greenwich Village, where interesting shops, bars and jam-packed restaurants spill onto every corner. The dynamic Washington Square Park takes centre stage.
