Welcome to vegan Mecca. Pure Food and Wine was one of the first upscale, organic, raw restaurants in the city and is still drawing crowds a decade later. The backyard garden sets a romantic mood, while the zucchini and heirloom tomato lasagne is deeply satisfying. The tasting menu may be a bit of a splurge but worth it for ambitious eaters grateful for innovative vegan cuisine (as the restaurant notes, there’s no tofu, tempeh, or seitan in sight). Plus, you’ll never know who you’ll encounter: Alec Baldwin met his wife Hilaria standing by the door.
As the main transportation hub for downtown, the diverse Union Square is never dull: farmers offer their local produce and goods at the greenmarket, street performers act near the bustling plaza and everyone embraces the surrounding shopping and nightlife.
