American Museum of Natural History

Prepare to commit at least half a day to this magnificent, family-friendly ode to human origins; there’s loads more to see than what was displayed during Night at the Museum – and yes, it’s far more impressive. Kids will get the biggest kick out of the vast array of finds: dinosaur fossils as far as the eye can see, meteorites, halls loaded with mammals, and Neanderthals, too. Novice birders will love the birds of the world and even New York’s own avian friends get a dedicated space. Other must-sees include the constellation-spanning, Dark Universe-illuminating Hayden Planetarium and the Discovery Room, perfect for young‘uns who are itching to get hands on real science.
Location
The quiet, tony atmosphere of the Upper West Side gives it a sort of stately grace not seen elsewhere in the city. Excellent brunch spots and bakeries abound and Central Park is a quick walk away.
