A Miami institution, Michael’s has been open eight years and feels like it will be open for another 100. Chef Michael Schwartz, a James Beard Award-winner, was the first in Miami to commit seriously to a philosophy of local seasonality. In the process, he has made his restaurant a symbol not only of the gentrified design district but also of Miami’s transformation more generally. With the freshest vegetables, fruit, fish eggs and meat – plus a dessert menu by famed pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith that has made her a star in her own right – the quality at Michael’s is always assured. The only problem is that, with almost daily changes to the menu, it can be difficult to encounter the same dish twice. Suffice to say, if you value produce-centric food cooked simply but with great sophistication, then you should beat a path to the door of Michael’s.

Just north of hip Wynwood, Buena Vista is a quieter residential area characterised by art deco houses, leafy streets and low-key cafes and shops.
