Q is the pinnacle of omakase dining. Veteran chef Hiroyuki Naruke from Tokyo heads the modern 26-seat space and prepares a traditional Edo-style 20-course menu in front of you so it’s highly recommended you request a counter seat and order a flight of sake to gain a front-row education. Watch as vinegar-seasoned rice mounds are moulded with precision, a slice of Kingfish is enhanced with a sprinkle of yuzu zest and the tender miso-glazed Santa Barbara uni (sea urchin), expertly marinated, melts in your mouth. Condiments are fresh and homemade – grated wasabi, pickled ginger and soy sauce are all readily on hand. The staff is gracious and there’s a theatrical element to chef Naruke’s presentation. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience.

Downtown Los Angeles is basking in its moment. The transformed heart of Los Angeles city is now alive with new storefronts, an influx of residents and a slew of condos and restored loft buildings. Its Arts District is undergoing a Brooklynisation, attracting chefs, artists and entrepreneurs.
