The Arts District is bound together by a wonderful feeling of community, particularly evident on the stretch of downtown’s East 3rd street where Alchemy Works is located. Open since November 2013, Raan Parton and his wife, Lindsay, run the gallery-like boutique that sells a well-edited selection of beautiful products from around the world. There are Almond Surfboards from nearby Newport Beach, Warby Parker sunglasses under a suspended glasshouse, LA-made Weiss Watches, Rodin oils and candles and Harry's men's shaving sets. A dried-flower installation by Tokyo’s Green Fingers greets customers by the door (it evolves with the seasons). In recent times, the shop was anchored by a 1971 Sabot sailboat; before that, a one-of-a-kind fully restored navy 1959 Fiat Spyder Abarth. What will be next? Pop into the adjoining Blacktop Coffee, order an espresso and sip while you shop.
Downtown Los Angeles is basking in its moment. The transformed heart of Los Angeles city is now alive with new storefronts, an influx of residents and a slew of condos and restored loft buildings. Its Arts District is undergoing a Brooklynisation, attracting chefs, artists and entrepreneurs.
