Treat your Tastebuds at Borough Market
Jam-packed with stalls, Borough Market is famed for selling some of the best produce in London. It’s a centuries-old hive of activity (historians have traced markets on this site as far back at the 1200s) and, today, you can peruse the fresh produce available and experience the profusion of cuisines that now play a part in the city’s culinary oeuvre. Traditional British favourites, like flapjacks, chutneys and Scotch eggs, sit alongside Indian curries, Argentinean empanadas and Thai coconut puddings.
If sampling the wares of more-than 100 stalls sounds too much for your tastebuds to process in one hit, then take a mid-morning pit-stop at coffee connoisseurs Monmouth across the road (2 Park Street), where a strong espresso will get you back in the game. The full market happens from Wednesday through Saturday (check the website for opening times).
Location
This area of London is known as Southwark but London Bridge is the closest stop, both for underground- and overground-travellers. However, if the morning is crisp and sunny, hop off at Monument tube, north of the river, and walk across London Bridge to take in a view of the Thames. There are also many iconic tourist attractions nearby: London’s oldest gothic church, Southwark Cathedral, is almost on the doorstep of the Market; Tower Bridge and the Tower of London are within easy walking distance to the west; to the east, you’ll find Shakespeare’s Globe, Tate Modern and, a bit further up the river, the London Eye.
