Adventure seekers may be surprised to learn that Istanbul is something of a Mecca for kiteboarding. World-championship kiteboarding competitions such as the IKA Formula Kite Worlds and the Burn Kiteboard World Championship are frequently held here. Kitesurfing is thrilling to watch – and thrilling to try. To have a go, head to Burc Beach on the Black Sea, only 15 kilometres out of the city. They have kiteboards for hire and also experienced instructors to help both beginners and those more advanced. It’s easy to get to by car and taxi and there’s also a service bus from Bogazici University in Rumeli Hisarustu.
