Time off to play? Perth has plenty to keep you busy.
Open daily except Tuesday, the Art Gallery of Western Australia has a strong focus on Australian works. The gallery houses one of the world’s strongest collections of Indigenous art and is home to other important works, such as Frederick McCubbin’s masterpiece, Down on his luck, painted in 1889.
A short distance from the CBD, Kings Park and Western Australian Botanic Garden have amazing views of the city and Swan River. One of the largest inner-city parks in the world, this patch is no slouch in the attractions stakes. More than 3000 species of the state’s unique flora are on display in the Botanic Garden, while bushland walking trails and guided tours let you get closer to nature. It’s an ideal way to spend an afternoon.
The city’s relationship with street art continues to develop – certainly in Northbridge, where colourful murals lend character to what is a fast-changing neighbourhood. Allow half an hour before meetings and dinner reservations to admire the walls surrounding Chinatown and the parking lot on the corner of Roe and William streets. Elsewhere in Northbridge, bold splashes of colour make the Central Institute of Technology TAFE buildings easy to spot.
Perth’s rooftop bars are a fantastic way to get your recommended daily intake of vitamin D. Mechanics Institute remains one of the city’s best destinations for cocktails while the bar section of Wildflower at Como The Treasury is an excellent spot for enjoying wines alfresco. Further along St Georges Terrace, Bob’s Bar at the top of Print Hall has everything that a craft beer enthusiast could ask for, all in a lunchtime-friendly format and address.
For gift shopping, the Horseshoe Bridge end of William Street in Northbridge can easily sustain an hour or two of browsing and buying. Northside Books carries an extensive selection of popular and independent titles and the buying policy is also eclectic at Safari’s Record Shack (189 William Street). StreetX features its own line of cool streetwear.
