Whether you're after a beach holiday, a break focused on great restaurants and wineries, or want to test your limits on an epic hike, Margaret River has it all. Celebrity chef – and avid surfer – Hayden Quinn reveals his favourite spots in this gorgeous part of Western Australia.
Where to stay
“Margarets Beach Resort for easy access to the beach and the Cape to Cape walking track. We stayed here and it was the perfect spot for us with a range of accommodation options from studio apartments all the way up to four-bedroom townhouses.”
Best breakfast spot
“Start your day at White Elephant Beach Cafe, across the road from Margarets Beach Resort. They have indoor and outdoor seating areas, plus a warming fire for colder mornings. The café is right on the beach so you can have a morning swim before your coffee.”
Best cellar door
“Vasse Felix showcases some of the region’s best cab sav and chardonnay; its proximity to the ocean, the ancient soils and the sheer isolation of this region make the wines so special.
“Take a trip south to Augusta and visit the ultra-modern Ocean Grown Abalone and sample the best green lip abalone you can get. The cool thing about this spot is that the abalone ranch-raised, meaning they grow on an artificial reef off the coast of Augusta and are hand-harvested, ensuring a sustainable and continuous supply of abalone.
“Explore the Cape to Cape track with Cape to Cape Explorer Tours. Tackle the whole 130 kilometres over a few days or set out for a day trip along one or more of the shorter tracks and experience the rugged beauty of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Gene Hardy at Cape to Cape Explorer Tours is the man in the know and he and his team will guide you every step of the way.
Best pub lunch
“Settle in at Settlers Tavern. I’m a sucker for a chicken schnitzel and an IPA – you have to give the local Beer Farm Brown Ale a go. It’s on tap at the bar and then you can grab a six-pack for later!
Best surf break
“Surf South Point for a few fun left handers! This break needs a good south swell and the right wind but is lots of fun when the conditions are right.”
