There’s often quite a decent breeze blowing across Port Phillip Bay, enhanced by the heat of the city. West Beach is easily one of the windiest parts of the bay and, with the relatively flat conditions, it’s a good spot for sports that require some good blow. You’ll often see windsurfers skimming across the surface near here and increasing numbers of kitesurfers are taking to the wind and water. GoKite offers lessons and all the kit for beginners, so they get up and riding fast in a short space of time – usually within a five-hour Get Riding Course. All you need to do is book and turn up with your swimmers and sunscreen.
St Kilda is Melbourne’s most famous beachside suburb. Here you’ll find the iconic face of Luna Park, a high proportion of delicious cake shops and many other restaurants and bars. Easily accessible from the CBD via tram.
