Maning Reef Café

The name screams “seafood” but the wood oven says “pizza”. The thin bases on these traditional Neapolitan-style numbers are excellent, as are the toppings, which tread a conservative line before busting out a hyperlocal move with a curried scallop option with Tasmanian scallops, Keen’s curry sauce and mozzarella.

Local Pizza

A hotspot in the northern suburb of Berriedale (now on the map thanks to MONA), Local Pizza has developed a reputation as one of the best options in greater Hobart thanks to its classic-recipe wood-fired pizzas. The puffy crusts have char and chew while the bases are crisp without shattering on the first bite. And the toppings? With creations such as the “kale Mary” – a veg-friendly combo of garlic base, kale, roast potato, three cheeses and rosemary – they’re as on-point as it gets.

These two sibling restaurants have an accommodating attitude to the contentious half-and-half pizza, making them an excellent choice for families with warring children. Cultura Espresso Bar & Restaurant

The menu ranges across the Italian boot at this smart CBD bolthole with gorgeous pasta and tender Sicilian duck but finds a particularly sweet spot with its pizza choices. Fat-crusted beauties are served a la mode, topped with the trendy Calabrian spreadable salami known as n’duja with spinach, olives and artichokes, or the house calzone stuffed with mushrooms, gorgonzola and basil.

Solo Pasta & Pizza

Plenty of pizzas have passed through the oven since Solo opened in 1983; the number each night has no doubt grown since it expanded in 2014. You should definitely embrace the Mafiosi here (a combination of pork sausage, salami, jalapeños and onion that’s too good to refuse), or go Italian gourmet with the Cinque Terre (heaped with artichoke, olives, pancetta, brie and garlic, it’s as rich as the families on the Italian Riviera).
