A newcomer in an historic district, Moss is a cosy cocoon on lively Salamanca Place. Opened in June, it’s a pair of sandstone warehouses transformed into a variety of room types, from the Loft, high above the street, to the Grove Balcony, with its private eyrie. The sophisticated guestrooms, some with exposed beams and original sandstone walls, come in combinations of black, dark-green, greys, blues and white, with modern artworks and handmade furniture. There’s no onsite restaurant or bar but you’re encouraged to bring a drink from your minibar and relax in the central living space, with its inviting sofa and armchairs.
The hotel is conveniently located in the centre of Hobart’s buzzing Salamanca Place, only metres from the harbourfront. An 18-minute drive from the airport, Moss is within walking distance of some of the city’s best restaurants, bars and cafés and the famous Saturday markets are on the doorstep.
Moss has a variety of room styles. There’s the Bower, with queen-sized bed, exposed beams and sandstone walls, rainforest shower, Bose sound system and pub-priced minibar. The larger Grove rooms feature either a deep-soak bath or a private balcony. The bath option has black walls and dark-grey carpet, with faux-fur cushions on Mid-century-style armchairs, a king-sized bed with ceiling-high wooden bedhead and a luxurious dark-green tiled bathroom.
Food and drinks
Moss doesn’t have an onsite bar or restaurant but venturing out provides myriad choices for dining and drinks. Looking for a classic Tassie pub for burgers and beer? The Whaler, established in 1829, is at ground level at number 39 and is just one of the many eating options on Salamanca Place. For something more high-end, the Lounge by Frogmore Creek has a menu featuring local produce, such as wallaby striploin roast, matched with wines from the eponymous vineyard.
For business travellers
Its convenient location makes Moss a good choice for corporate travellers. Proximity to cafés, bars and eateries for business entertaining and fast in-house wi-fi and secure parking add to the hotel’s attraction. A co-working space in nearby Macquarie Street is available from $46 per week.
For wellness travellers
Moss doesn’t offer in-house wellness facilities but the city has ample exercise choices. Take a run along waterfront Castray Esplanade then through Parliament House Gardens, one of many running routes. Get out on the water and hire a kayak for a tour of the historic harbourside precinct. Wellington Park at Mount Wellington, a 30-minute drive from Hobart, has walking tracks suitable for all fitness levels, from 20 minutes to more than six hours duration.
The fab factor
A lush green living wall of 6000 Tasmanian plants and moss-covered stones graces the reception area, creating a Zen-like element.
