Lake Mungo, NSW
I love the isolation – and simultaneous proximity to the origin of things – of Lake Mungo, the centrepiece of the World Heritage-listed Willandra Lakes Region in NSW. Saltbush springs from the cracked earth, fossilised ice-age footprints trail across the lakebed, lunettes mark the site of the world’s oldest ritual cremation. This is where the 42,000-year-old remains of Mungo Man and Mungo Lady were found. Be still and imagine them thriving in this once-lush, now-petrified inland basin. – Catherine Marshall Click to enter our Best-Kept Secrets Competition
