Darwin’s newest pub is also its most aptly named: Smith Street Social welcomes all comers with a something-for-everyone menu, plenty of beers and ciders on tap, a punchy cocktail list and almost-daily specials. From the smiling staff to the comfy booth seating, it all feels friendly and familiar. Sure, you could scarf down a steak or chicken parma but we recommend sharing a stone-baked pizza – perhaps pumpkin and feta with basil or prosciutto with rocket.

If your buddy’s vegan or coeliac, no problem – vegan cheese and gluten-free bases are options. Cured kingfish tacos with spiced corn and pickled cabbage and crumbed smoked mozzarella with broccoli pesto are both ideal for sharing. Speaking of which, cocktails come by the jug: Campari, Pimm’s or grapefruit and tequila-based Paloma are surefire crowd-pleasers. And depending on the day, you and your posse might get two mains for the price of one, a half-priced steak or a pizza-and-pint deal.

22 Smith Street, Darwin; (08) 8989 2111; open seven days for lunch and dinner.
