There are few places that seem to elevate your standing by sheer association but the cavernous, century-old site of Ovolo Woolloomooloo manages it. If staff weren’t so welcoming, you’d assume that securing a spot here was open only to the exclusive few. Hell – the place even has its own Spotify Radio station (Bowie and Fleetwood Mac populate the song list, of course).

The location

Ovolo Woolloomooloo

Situated on Woolloomooloo’s historic Finger Wharf, Ovolo benefits not only from a healthy ring of institutionally beloved eateries (NB: Otto, China Doll and Aki’s India all share wall space with the hotel) but also from being an easy ride from neighbourhoods that bear a similar shade of cool. Potts Point and its experimental eateries are within walking distance and Surry Hills and its cafés, boutiques and established style set are but a 10-minute cab ride away.

The rooms

Ovolo Woolloomooloo

Eight room types populate the vast and historic space of Woolloomooloo’s Finger Wharf: Superoo, Deluxaroo King, Deluxaroo Double Double, Deluxaroo Loft, Cityvoo King, Cityvoo Double Double, Cityvoo Loft and Ultraroo. Standardised with fast, reliable wifi, an in-room iPad, well-stocked mini bar for unlimited grazing, bathrooms with all inclusions, the main difference between them is size and splendour. Larger rooms have more space to play with when it comes to art, design and interiors, not to mention a few little extras like an in-room bar.

Food and drink

Alibi Kitchen

The pull of Ovolo Woolloomooloo’s plant-based eatery Alibi is magnetic: designer Hassell Studio has woven pockets of intimate dining and drinking spaces among millennial pink and blonde wood accents to cultivate a defiantly cosy restaurant amongst the vast, cavernous venue. The attitude of the place is homey but there’s a discernible sense of adventure evident in the menu options. Dumplings imperceptibly crafted from coconut flesh pack serious punch in their Asian flavour and the Udon noodle bowl warms and comforts in its slurpy, creamy, yet non-cream-based, mess.

For wellness travellers

Not keen on sacrificing your routine during your stay? The property has a 24-hour gym on-site, to the right of the downstairs dining area, also featuring a 17-metre heated indoor pool.

For business travellers

Digital nomads will love the free wifi and the comfy breakout spaces in-room and also sprinkled downstairs, in between artworks. If small amounts of printing are required, the front-desk staff will happily oblige for a fee. The hotel also has 10 spaces for conferences and attendees can take advantage of Ovolo freebies, of course.

The fab factor

A tie-breaker between the ever-hospitable Ovolo goodie bag of lollipops, chocolates and nuts left in every room begging to be replenished (no, really – it says so on the very bag) and the retro gaming consoles alongside Alibi dining tables tempting almost every passer-by into a Pacman tournament.
