Why Carlton Hotel is the Perfect Base to Explore Singapore

Brought to you by Carlton Hotel Singapore
There are few things more frustrating than schlepping to the other side of an unfamiliar city. Choosing a central base for your stay is essential for a hassle-free trip, although Singapore’s impeccable public transport and grid-like layout make it easier for travellers to find their way than to traverse, say, Paris. Carlton Hotel, located on Bras Basah Road at the Victoria Street intersection, is the ideal spot to start your adventures around the city. Here are just a few of the attractions you can easily make your way to from your room.
Art and culture
There are scores of museums in Singapore so be sure to set aside some time to explore them. Within walking distance of Carlton Hotel are several key cultural destinations, including Singapore’s National Museum, Art Museum, Peranakan Museum and Philatelic Museum, which will give you a broad overview of the country’s history and culture, as well as a chance to see some truly beautiful architecture.
Also not to be missed during your visit is the iconic Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. If you can’t attend one of the many performances or exhibitions, ranging from dance and theatre to music and film, at least walk past to see the uniquely “spiked” building. It’s a 10-minute stroll from the hotel.
Dining
It’s hard to go wrong dining out in Singapore. The diverse mix of cultures is reflected in an eclectic restaurant scene so if you’re hankering for a particular dish, chances are you’ll be able to find a very tasty version. Across the road from Carlton is Chijmes, a former convent school, which is now home to several restaurants and bars.
Shopping
Head out the lobby doors towards Orchard Road, one of the best-known shopping strips in the world. The start of this 2.2-kilometre stretch of stores is just one stop away on the train. As well as the requisite high-end boutiques, you’ll also find art galleries, food and ethnic wares along the tree-lined pedestrian mall. Be prepared to repack your suitcase.
Other shopping spots within a 10- or 15-minute walk of Carlton Hotel are Millenia Walk, Marina Square and Bugis Village, which is valued by locals for affordable fashion and wares. And just across the road, you’ll find Raffles City.
Business
No matter where work takes you in the city, it’s easy to get to key business areas from Carlton Hotel. Situated on the edge of the CBD, it is a quick trip on the train to Raffles Place. If you’re in town for a conference, the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre and Sands Expo and Convention Centre are within easy reach by either foot or train – especially Suntec, which is only about a 10-minute walk.

Getting around
Though there are several bus stops dotted around Carlton Hotel (and most buses have air-conditioning), the easiest way to whiz around the city is on the train – Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is super-efficient. There are several MRT stops, all on different lines, just five minutes’ walk from the hotel, including Bras Basah, City Hall and Bugis. You can purchase single-trip tickets but if you’re using the MRT regularly during your stay, pick up a Singapore Tourist Pass for unlimited travel for one, two or three days from the TransitLink Ticket Offices at Bugis, City Hall or Changi Airport.
