Open 24 hours, everyday of the year, Mustafa Centre has attained almost cult status amongst Singaporeans. This shopping centre might not be as swanky as the malls in Orchard Road but what it lacks in glitz, it makes up for in a jaw-dropping variety of products that sprawls across 150,000 square feet in Little India. From watches to fashion apparel, electronics, groceries and furniture, you’ll be stumped to name something you need that Mustafa Centre does not sell… and at competitive prices. It’s notoriously difficult for first-timers to navigate and the service standards are far from stellar but getting lost in the endless rows of narrow shopping aisles is a huge part of the fun. On Sundays, the mall is bursting at the seams with people so head there after midnight or before 9am on any other day for a relatively relaxed shopping experience.
Little India is noisy, messy and crowded but it is also one of the most buzzing and culturally authentic historic districts frequented by tourists and locals alike. Explore the narrow laneways that branch out from the main street, Serangoon Road, and discover old-fashioned trades like vendors selling garlands of aromatic jasmine and fortune tellers with their parrots.
