Nothing embodies the quintessential Singaporean experience quite like a visit to a hawker centre. With a variety of stalls under one roof, it’s a hot, sweaty, multi-cultural gastronomical experience – all at wallet-friendly prices. Maxwell Hawker Centre is one of the best on the island. If you’re in doubt over what to order, you can’t go wrong by heading to the nearest stall with a snaking queue and joining the line. With over a hundred stalls serving up everything from congee (Zhen Zhen Porridge) to fry-it-yourself Chinese pancakes (Hum Jin Pang), there’s something for every palate here. And, while everyone waits patiently in line at Anthony Bourdain-approved Tian Tian Chicken Rice, head over to Ah Tai Hainanese Chicken Rice, run by the former chef of Tian Tian, which is every bit as good.
Maxwell Hawker Centre sits right across Chinatown and at the junction of Club Street, a stretch lined with watering holes, hip restaurants and specialty stores (the Lomography Gallery Store Singapore is a few doors away). Spend an entire day here checking out the sights and sounds, starting from Chinatown in the morning and ending at Club Street at dusk.
