The Roots Barbershop

“Old-school but never old-fashioned” is the philosophy at  The Roots Barbershop, where you can get a hot-towel shave for the cost of a cappuccino in Australia. You’ll even receive a head-and-shoulder massage with aromatherapy oils. They also cut kids’ hair and have father-and-son deals on Sundays at both Seminyak and Canggu.

Jari Menari

The all-male massage therapists at Seminyak institution Jari Menari – literally meaning “dancing fingers” – will iron out all manner of kinks and strains. The four-handed signature massage, performed by two practitioners simultaneously, guarantees total relaxation. The spa means business and the default pressure is quite firm so speak up if you need your therapist to apply a lighter touch. Jari Menari also conducts massage courses at its dedicated training centre; they range from a one-day introduction to a more intensive two-week program.

Dorsey’s Barber  Shop at Deus

You’ve bought the T-shirt, now have the beard trim. Set in the tourist hub of sprawling Canggu, Dorsey’s Barber Shop (Jalan Batu Mejan 8; +62 878 6188 2488) is the icing on the cake at Deus Ex Machina’s man cave, Deus Temple of Enthusiasm. Owned by former pro surfer Damea Dorsey, the barber shop is in a century-old traditional timber joglo near the beach so you may see current and retired professional boardriders, such as Taj Burrow and Jay Davies, wander in. Walk-ins are welcome – even encouraged.
