Melbourne and Sydney may be locked in a battle for dining supremacy but there’s another Australian destination that’s now a contender: Adelaide. In a comprehensive study of 100 of the world’s top dining destinations, the South Australian capital was ranked higher than the country’s most populated city, Sydney.
Sliding into 74th place, vineyard-edged Adelaide beat the harbour city by four places, as well as ranking better than Jakarta, Edinburgh and Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city.
The study applied 11 criteria including accessibility, quality, diversity of cuisine and affordability for locals and visitors, as well as expert opinions of the city’s culinary scene to determine the final ranking for cities as far-flung as the Senegalese city of Dakar (number 92) and South Korea’s Jeonju (number 88). It also noted the number of restaurants per 10,000 residents and the strength of vegetarian and vegan options across eateries in each city.
Although the list, compiled by London-based online catering service Caterwings, gave Adelaide a more favourable position than Sydney, it wasn’t the highest-rated Australian city. That title went to dining darling Melbourne, which secured number 65.
The list’s top 10 chronicles some expected inclusions – seafood-centric Tokyo came in second, the diverse dining scene of New York placed third and vibrant, lively Singapore graced number five – but there were still many surprising entries. Peru’s capital, Lima, beat out London and Munich to land eighth place, while casino-crazy Las Vegas managed eleventh. Spain emerged as a frontrunner for food, with three cities in the top 10, including first place, taken by San Sebastian, the Basque Country luminary home to three three-Michelin star restaurants.
