Four mesmerising New South Wales stops for wildlife lovers
What better way to start the adventure than by taking in the beautiful East Coast scenery while kayaking around the Byron Bay marine reserve. Fly to Ballina and make your way to Byron Bay to embark on guided tour and get up close and personal with bottlenose dolphins and sea turtles. If you're there between May and November, you may even witness whales migrating past the coastline.
Next stop, Coffs Harbour. Set sail around the Coffs Coast and enjoy the breath-taking sight of humpback whales. The more adventurous visitors aboard some of the boats can even lay on nets suspended over the bow and experience a truly 'wet and wild' ride while the whales swim below. This event is seasonal, make sure you don't miss out by visiting between May and November.
The next stop, Port Macquarie, is a two hour drive south of Coffs Harbour. The Koala Hospital here, staffed by volunteers and funded by charity, has been rescuing and rehabilitating injured koalas since 1973.
You've already encountered whales, turtles, dolphins and koalas, but there is more native wildlife to meet. With a variety of different animals sheltered within its walls, the Australian Reptile Park in Somersby is the perfect place to meet some of Australia's strangest and most fascinating creatures. Among the animals included in the hands-on experience are Komodo Dragons, real life Tasmanian Devils and even resident celebrity, Hugo the Galapagos Tortoise.
