Qantas flies high in sustainability rankings

Sydney, 15 September 2011

Qantas has been named among the world’s most sustainable companies in global rankings compiled by Dow Jones.

Qantas is one of only two airlines listed on Dow Jones World Sustainability Index – along with Air France-KLM. It is also the only Australian airline listed on the Dow Jones Asia Pacific Sustainability Index (for the third year in a row).

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI), launched in 1999, evaluate businesses against a range of economic, social and environmental criteria. They are the most established rankings of their kind and are widely used by companies and investors to assess sustainability performance. Companies are invited to be assessed for the DJSI based on their performance in these categories.

Qantas’ Group Executive, Government and Corporate Affairs, Olivia Wirth, said Qantas’ inclusion on the global index reflected its strong commitment to good corporate citizenship.

“Recognition by Dow Jones confirms that we are meeting our responsibilities to our customers, employees, the community, the environment and our shareholders,” Ms Wirth said.

“The Qantas Group plays an important role in Australian life. We employ around 35,000 people, spend over $3 billion with suppliers and contribute over $21 million in community investment within Australia.

“Through the efforts of our employees, as well as our charitable arm, the Qantas Foundation, we support a wide range of charities, organisations and initiatives focused on making a difference to communities at a grass-roots level.

“The Group also has a comprehensive environmental strategy focused on fleet renewal and new technology, fuel efficiency and the development of sustainable aviation fuels.

“All these things are considered by Dow Jones in putting together their sustainability index, as well as economic categories such as corporate governance and risk management – where Qantas has robust systems in place.

“We are delighted to have been included on the world index for the first time, and we remain focused on ensuring that we operate sustainably in all areas of the Group.”
