Qantas Big Splash

Sydney, 30 September 2004

Communities around Australia are being encouraged to have fun and raise funds for a good cause as part of the Qantas Big Splash.

The Qantas Big Splash is a national fundraising swim-a-thon held in conjunction with Royal Life Saving Society and supported by Australian Swimming.

Held on November 20 and 21 at swimming pools across the country, it's a great opportunity for swimming clubs to raise funds for their own use or they can donate the proceeds to other worthy local causes.

The Qantas Big Splash is part of the airline’s community program, Sharing the Spirit, which involves an extensive program of events and activities aimed at bringing people together with their heroes and dreams.

As a Qantas Sharing the Spirit Ambassador, Kieren Perkins is playing an active part in Big Splash and he encourages swimmers of all abilities to join in the fun and help raise funds.

"Big Splash is a great opportunity for people to get together and participate in an event which combines excitement, exercise and raising money for a good cause."

Participants will be sponsored for the number of continuous laps they swim during the weekend, with all money going to either their nominated swimming club or aquatic centre or towards a good cause in the local community.

Money raised from the previous event went towards a range of uses ranging from buying equipment to sending children to competitions, with a number of deaf swimmers using the event to generate funds to help them participate in the Australian Deaflympics.

Additionally, through purchasing Qantas Big Splash merchandise clubs will also be supporting Royal Life Saving Society.

Some great prizes are also available with the highest fundraising efforts by clubs and individuals in each state will be eligible for prizes ranging from coaching clinics with an Australian swimming star to PlayStation 2 consoles and trips to Sea World.

Entries for the Qantas Big Splash close on October 15. For more information on the Qantas Big Splash contact your local swimming club or call (02) 9552 3319 or
