Qantas Dismisses Baggage Handler

Melbourne, 18 May 2005

Qantas said today it had terminated the services of the baggage handler who was stood down last week as a result of information that arose during investigations into a cocaine smuggling operation at Sydney International Airport.

The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Mr Geoff Dixon, said Qantas investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drug smuggling were continuing.

Mr Dixon said the airline was working closely with the NSW Crime Commission, the NSW Police and the Australian Federal Police.

"At this stage we are concentrating our investigations on a small number of baggage handlers.

"We retain our confidence in the vast majority of our baggage handlers throughout Australia who are decent, hard working people.

"They are also feeling the effects of the widespread concern and publicity surrounding the issues," he said.
