Qantas and NSW Institute of Sport join forces
Sydney, 15 May 2002
Qantas today announced a three-year sponsorship of the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS).
Qantas Group General Manager Marketing Curtis Davies said the sponsorship included assistance with air travel for more than 700 athletes at the Institute.
"Australia's finest athletes will travel on Qantas regional, domestic and international services to compete in events and train in different environments.
"The airline has a long history of supporting Australian sportsmen and women and Qantas is proud to be the official airline of the NSWIS," he said.
NSWIS Director Ralph Doubell said the sponsorship comes at a critical time when many of the Institute's best athletes are about to embark on Northern Hemisphere training and competition programs, culminating at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in July.
The Qantas association with sport in Australia stretches back more than 45 years to the 1956 Olympic Games, when the airline carried the Olympic Flame to Melbourne.
