Qantas Announces Winners of Qantas Foundation Art Award
Sydney, 21 July 2010
Qantas, through its charitable foundation the Qantas Foundation, today announced the winners of the third annual Qantas Foundation Art Award.
A winner from each state and territory will share in cash and airfares to the value of $112,000 – enabling Australian artists the opportunity to travel the world and develop ideas to bring home to Australia.
Qantas Chief Executive Officer, Alan Joyce, said he was very proud to announce the winners of this year’s award.
“Qantas has a long history of supporting Australian artists, particularly through the Spirit of Youth Awards which has, over the years, involved some of the big names of fashion, film and photography partnering with Qantas to support talented young artists,” he said.
“The Qantas Foundation Art Award continues both our commitment to the arts, and our commitment to being a leader among corporate Australia in ensuring talented Australian artists receive support.
Chair of the Qantas Foundation, John Field, thanked some of Australia’s leading arts figures for their involvement in the award.
“The Foundation was very fortunate to have renowned arts identities as part of this year’s judging panel including Elizabeth Ann Macgregor from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Edmund Capon, Director of the Art Gallery of NSW, Kon Gouriotis representing the Australia Council for the Arts, Alan Dodge, former Director of the Art Gallery of Western Australia and art collector Pat Corrigan,” he said.
“I thank all of our judges for volunteering their time and expertise to the Qantas Foundation to ensure the success of this award.”
The Qantas Foundation Art Award was established in 2008 with a $3.4 million donation from Qantas. Now in its third year, the award has supported the careers of 24 Australian artists, who have exhibited around Australia and the world, including at the Venice Biennale.
