Qantas Launches Major Sustainable Tourism Award
Canberra, 29 February 2008
Qantas today announced that it would establish a major award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism.
Qantas Group General Manager Sales and Distribution, Mr Rob Gurney, said the award would recognise and encourage Australian tourism operators that minimised their impact on the local environment, respected local culture and provided benefits to local communities.
"Qantas is a major supporter of the Australian tourism industry," Mr Gurney said.
"We are committed to sustainable growth across our own operations and seek to acknowledge and support tourism businesses that protect, enhance and promote Australia's distinctive destinations and environment.
"This award is designed to promote excellence in sustainablity practices and also showcase Australia to domestic and international tourists as one of the world's leading sustainable tourism destinations."
Mr Gurney said Qantas would offer a substantial prize with further details to be announced later this year.
"To complement this major new award, Qantas will invest in seminars and workshops around Australia to support local operators in adopting environmentally friendly business practices," he said.
"The winner of the inaugural Qantas Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism will be announced in February 2009, drawn from State and Territory Sustainable Tourism winners across 25 categories."
Mr Gurney said Qantas had a comprehensive environmental strategy in place to minimise its own impact on the environment.
He said that the Qantas Group's extensive range of environmental initiatives throughout the business aimed to save two million tonnes of CO2 by 2011, with targets also set for energy, waste and water reduction.
