Lyon is one of France's finest destinations, with remarkable Lyonnaise food, culture, fascinating history and architecture. Be sure to visit Vieux Lyon, the picturesque old town listed as a UNESCO site, the many museums including the Fine Arts Museum which is one of the largest art galleries in France. It's a beautiful French city and one of its biggest drawcards is its dining scene with plenty of bouchons (taverns) to enjoy, along with the lush parks or climb Fourvière Hill for stunning views over the city. It's one of France's best kept secrets and a destination to add to your travel list. 

When to visit

The most popular time to visit Lyon is in summer (June to August) with plenty of sunshine and average temperature around 26°C. The best time to visit is in spring (May to March) with cooler temperatures, less crowds and the spring flowers start to blossom. Temperatures average around 21°C. September is another favourable time to visit with cool, crisp weather and colourful greenery. Winters are cool and dark around 3°C making it a good time to enjoy the Lyonnaise restaurants serving local fare such as sausages, duck pâté or roast pork.

Lyon–Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS).Opens in a new tab or window It is the international airport of Lyon, the third-biggest city in France. It lies in Colombier-Saugnieu, 20 km southeast of Lyon's city centre.

When your flight arrives in Lyon, you’ll be welcomed by the staff the airport to get your visit off to the right start. 

Getting into Lyon from Lyon Airport         

With a wide range of transport options available at Lyon Airport, travelling into the city centre is easy. Choose from train, TGV, bus, taxi, shuttle, car rental or Uber. A fast and reliable link between the airport and Lyon is the Rhônexpress tram, which takes less than 30 minutes. Located a few minutes’ walk from terminals 1 and 2, the SNCF train station allows you a quick connection to your destination in Lyon and other areas in France. Lyon Airport is served by regular coach shuttles, located at the bus station. The car sharing service is an ideal means of transport to reach the city centre or you can take a taxi or request an Uber. Car rental companies are located near the airport terminals if you wish to hire a car, or a convenient option is to organise a hotel transfer.

Getting around Lyon

Getting around Lyon is smooth, with plenty of transport options to suit your needs. Choose from metro, trams, bus, taxis, Uber, on foot or bikes. The metro network in Lyon is excellent, clean and easy to use with four different lines crossing the city. The central bus station is located at Lyon Perrache train station with over 130 bus lines, and it's best to buy a Lyon City Card to use on all public transport. The centre of Lyon is best explored on foot to take in all the sights, or you can hire a bike from multiple points over the city and its a lovely way to explore, especially along the riverfront. Taxis are available throughout the city and it's possible to hail one on the street or from taxi ranks, alternatively you may wish to request an Uber. You can hire a car, though it's not necessary in the city, but handy if you're looking to explore beyond Lyon.
