When to visit

There are two seasons that could claim to be the best time to visit Oslo, summer with its warm and long days and winter full of Christmas mood and sports. June to July are perfect months to explore the city, chill on rooftop bars and hunt for wild berries. Temperatures range around 21°C. Winter brings Christmas foods, winter sports like skiing and ice skating with temperatures dropping to freezing. Spring is also a popular time to visit, late April to May and you can catch Norway's National Day.

Arrival information

What is the main airport called?

Stavanger Airport, Sola (SVG). It is an international airport located in Rogaland county, Norway. The airport is located 11 km southwest of the centre of the city of Stavanger.

Arriving in Stavanger

The helpful staff at Stavanger Airport will greet you when you land and assist with your travel needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.

Getting into Stavanger from Stavanger Airport

Getting into Stavanger from the airport is easy, thanks to the different range of transport options available. Choose from taxis, bus, hotel shuttle or car rental. Taxi is a handy option and takes about just 15 minutes to get to Stavanger. You’ll find the taxi stand between the terminal and the parking garage, go to the left when you leave the arrivals hall. There are several buses to Stavanger from the airport, and the airport express bus is a comfortable way to travel to the city. It takes between 20 to 30 minutes to reach the city. Local buses also operate with various stops along the way, and the entire route takes an hour. Car rental companies are available from the airport, or you can organise a hotel shuttle or private transfer.

Getting around Stavanger

Thanks to Stavanger's excellent bus system, taxis, electric bikes, tours and car hire, it is easy to travel around the city. Stavanger’s U-shaped waterfront area that surrounds the inner harbour of the historic Vågen bay is very walkable. It’s also one of the city’s most beautiful spots for sightseeing strolls. The city centre is compact and traffic free, so walking is a good option. The bus service connects most of the city and its best to buy a pre-paid card to travel on buses. Taking a taxi is a good option and you can hail one on the street or from the popular attractions. Cycling is a fun way to get around Stavanger and it’s easy to hire one of the electric bikes through the app. Car hire can be tricky, especially with the narrow one way streets, so it’s best to use a taxi or public transport.
