Coronet Peak

If you find the idea of sliding down the side of a mountain on two wooden planks a little bit daunting, Coronet Peak is the place for you. With just 27 runs and an impressive ski lift system, Coronet Peak is ideal for those looking to improve their skills. Plus, the views across Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables mountain range are astounding. Unlike a lot of the New Zealand’s resorts, Coronet peak also has some lovely on-site accommodation.

The Remarkables

A touch smaller than Coronet Peak, this resort sits on the mountain ranges of the same name. And just like the name, these Mountains and the resort sitting amongst them are truly remarkable. Ideal for beginners due to its wide, friendly ranges, The Remarkables ski resort include some of the best vistas and views in New Zealand. If you’re willing to hike, there are some harder runs around the mountain ranges. We suggest renting a car and staying in Queenstown just a short 40 minute drive away.

Craigieburn Valley

One for the pros, Craigieburn Valley has the highest proportion of black runs in New Zealand. For those of you who can’t work out how to turn or stop on skis, there’s some pretty epic hikes around the mountain and very affordable drinks available at some of the guest lodges. The resort boasts long runs of untouched powdery snow, and secluded, cosy accommodation. There isn’t much overcrowding, which is ideal for pro skiers, due to no rental facilities and only a few rope tows.

Cardrona

A favourite with locals and tourists alike, Cardrona has a little something for everyone. Terrain for all levels of skiers from novice to expert, amazing views and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, it’s easy to see why this resort is so popular. Located on the South Island, the resort sits conveniently between Queenstown and Wanaka, (ideal if you’ve rented a car). There’s some on-mountain accommodation in New Zealand’s highest alpine apartments if you want to stay on the mountain. If you’re a drinker, not skier, there’s cafes and restaurants spotted all through the resort, including a mountain-top champagne bar. Cheers!

Mount Hutt

The highest mountain on the South Island, Mount Hutt has reliable snow coverage all winter. And because of this, the resort has the longest ski season in all New Zealand. In terms of terrain, the Mountain has runs for all types of skiers and is ideal for young families, as kiddies under the age of 10 ski free. Most people choose to stay in nearby Methven, which offers affordable accommodation.

Treble Cone

With some of the best views of Lake Wanaka and Mt. Aspiring, Treble Cone is truly epic. With great terrain for intermediates and hardcore skiers, the resort sees the most amount of snow in New Zealand. When mini-bar coffee isn’t cutting it anymore, and need a hit of espresso, hire a car and drive out to Wanaka where you’ll find warm cafes, places to shop and most importantly, restaurants offering some of New Zealand’s finest wine.

North Island

Whakapapa

Whakapapa is epic. Used as the backdrop for Lord of The Rings’ Mordor it sits on top of an active volcano and is pretty gnarly. Located on New Zealand’s North Island, Whakapapa is ideal for families. The resort has 70 different runs depending on your skill level and the biggest beginner-friendly area in all New Zealand. Accommodation is easy as well with a few lodges available on site and a bigger selection found just ten minutes away in Ohakune.
