Melbourne travel information

When to visit

Visit Melbourne at any time of the year and you won’t be short of things to do, however you should always be prepared for sunshine and a downpour on the same day. Summer is mostly sunny and an ideal time to explore the coast, while autumn and winter are quite chilly and perfect for exploring the city’s famed restaurants and museums.

Arrival information

What is the main airport called?

Melbourne AirportOpens external site in a new window. Located 20 km (12.5 miles) from the city centre, Melbourne Domestic Airport (MEL), also known as Tullamarine Airport, is the main airport serving the state of Victoria. Qantas operates from two terminals in Melbourne T1 - domestic and T2 - international.

Arriving in Melbourne

The friendly staff at Melbourne Airport will be waiting to greet you when you land. Once you collect your bags, there are several transport options available to get you to the CBD and surrounding suburbs.

Getting into Melbourne from Melbourne Airport

The easiest way to reach the centre of Melbourne is via taxi or rideshare, which can be accessed from beyond the terminal building. For a more affordable alternative, the SkyBus connects the airport to Southern Cross station and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Getting around Melbourne

Melbourne’s city centre is easy to navigate on foot, but for faster trips around the CBD, free trams are available. For longer journeys, purchase a reloadable myki card and enjoy unlimited access to Melbourne’s network of trains, buses and trams for the duration of your stay. Taxis and ride-share services operate in the city or you could jump on the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus.
