When to visit

Helsinki has a humid continental climate, with cold winters and enjoys long daylight hours during the summer solstice. Summer (June to August) is the best time to visit, as the city has warm days averaging around 18°C, and life springs out onto the streets. During winter, the days are dark and cold and temperatures dip to -5°C, making it a good time to stay indoors and enjoy the cosy bars.

Helsinki Airport (HEL).Opens in a new tab or window It is the main international airport of the city of Helsinki, in Finland. The airport is located in the neighbouring city of Vantaa, 17.0 km north of Helsinki city centre.

Arriving in Helsinki

When your flight arrives in Helsinki, you’ll be welcomed by the staff the airport to get your visit off to the right start. 

Getting into Helsinki from Helsinki Airport    

With a range of transport options available at Helsinki Airport, travelling into the city centre is easy. Choose from train, bus, taxi, hotel shuttle, car rental, car sharing or Uber. Traveling by train couldn’t be easier, as the airport station is within a short walk of both terminals. There are two services: I-trains and P-trains operating slightly different routes. There are various airport buses from the airport to Helsinki city centre, Turke, Tampere and elsewhere in Finland. Various taxis operate between the airport and the city centre, with ranks located in front of both terminals. It is possible to pre-book a taxi or you may wish to request an Uber. Car rental is available with service desks located between Terminals 1 and 2. Conveniently located near the airport are ferry connections, if you're travelling to Baltic cities. Alternatively, you may wish to organise a private limousine or airport transfer.

Getting around Helsinki

Getting around Helsinki is easy, with an efficient range transport options to suit your needs. The city has a range of transport options including metro, trams, buses, ferries, Ubers and bikes. You can buy tickets to board buses and trams at metro stations or purchase in advance from your mobile. Tram 4 is ideal for architecture buffs, and tram 6 is designed for those interested in design, art and food. It's best to buy a Helsinki card to travel, that also provides free entry to many museums and attractions. There is a ferry to Suomenlinna, if you wish to travel to the sea fortress. There is also a Kutsuplus service, an on-demand minibus service that you can book. Taxis are available which can be hailed on the street or booked by phone, alternatively you can request an Uber. As the public transport system is excellent and most of central Helsinki is accessible on foot, it’s not necessary to rent a car in the city. If you wish to travel further afield, you can rent a car. A popular way of getting around Helsinki is by bike. It's easy to hire a bike and cycle around the city.
