Surrounded by the Alps and Jura mountains, Geneva has some of the world’s most breath-taking views of Mont Blanc. Choose to take in the natural beauty of the Swiss city or spend a day admiring the architecture of iconic buildings like the Reformation Wall and St Pierre’s Cathedral. Be sure not to miss the iconic Jet d’Eau fountain at the centre of Lake Geneva as you stroll around the stunning lake, then relax at one of the many thermal baths. It’s a cosmopolitan city, with Michelin resultants serving Swiss cuisine, a great base for skiing and offers a range of museums. There is plenty for everyone to enjoy.

When to visit

The best time to visit Geneva is from May to October, when the weather is relatively warm with a lovely breeze from Lake Geneva. Spring (March to May) is a good time to visit as the trees blossom, though it can be cool with temperatures ranging from 11°C to 19°C. Summer is one of the best times to visit (June to August), with many events and lots of sunshine. The average temperature is 25°C. If you are into skiing and to see the Christmas markets, then winter is the time to visit, though its very cold from 1°C to 5°C.

Geneva Airport (GVA)Opens in a new tab or window. Unofficially known as Cointrin Airport, is the international airport of Geneva in Switzerland. It is located 4 km northwest of the city centre, on the Swiss-French border. 

Arriving in Geneva 

The helpful staff at Geneva Airport will greet you when you land and assist with your travel needs. Once you collect your bags from the arrivals area, there are various transport options available to get you on your way.         

Getting into Geneva from Geneva Airport  

With a range of transport options available at Geneva Airport, travelling into the city centre is easy. Choose from train, bus, taxi, shuttle, car hire or Uber. There is a railway station in Geneva Airport with direct access from the check-in and arrivals level. It takes only 7 minutes to reach the city centre, which is the fastest way. Connections to other parts of Switzerland and France are also available. At the airport there are car hire options from the arrivals level, car sharing or free shuttles are available to some Swiss hotels from Genève Airport. Taxis are available and it takes just 20 minutes to get to the city, or you can book an Uber. TPG urban buses serve the airport and run every 8 to 15 minutes at peak hours, as well as regional buses running to French and Swiss cities.

Getting around Geneva

Getting around the Lake Geneva Region is simple, with a range transport options to suit your needs. Public transport in the Lake Geneva area is excellent with boats, trains, and buses. Boats and ferries cruise on all parts of Lake Geneva and is a pleasant way to travel in the region. Trains are an easy way to travel and many small towns have train stations that make it a convenient way to travel. It's possible to hire a car as the roads are well maintained, though parking can be tricky. A good way to explore the centre of Geneva is on foot or cycling is a great option and a lovely way to see the lake. You may wish to join a tour or book an Uber to take you to your destination.
