Here are some inspirational trips to get you started.
There’s no better way to discover America than by hitting the open road on legendary Route 66. This strip of highway originally started in Chicago almost 90 years ago, made its way west through six states before reaching California and the coastal city of Los Angeles.
After soaking up the sun at Santa Monica, why not jump in your car and take this historic route eastward? Make your way through the extraordinary Californian desert, home of the Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve, and head into picturesque Arizona. You can leave the ‘Mother Road’ there and head north to the sparkling lights of Las Vegas, or continue through the American heartland to Chicago or all the way to the east coast and fabulous New York. Either way, what a ride!
Follow one of the world’s most celebrated routes on this coast-hugging drive. You can start this trip at either end of California. Here, the trip begins in San Diego at the southern end of the state then travels north to beach towns, the bustle and excitement of Los Angeles, through elegant Santa Barbara and surrounding wine country, then north to more beaches and attractions in Carmel, Monterey and Santa Cruz. End in the ultimate “City by the Bay,” San Francisco. Need car hire?
Take a looped tour through the northern half of the state and take in some of the region’s favourite destinations. Start in San Francisco, park your hire car and check out the Golden Gate Bridge before making your way through to the soaring monoliths and cascading waterfalls of Yosemite Valley and the national park. To top off the bucket-list essential spots, make sure to visit Lake Tahoe and stay at a world-class alpine resort before heading off along the wild and scenic north coast to enjoy the towering redwoods.
So what are you waiting for? Start dreaming big and head where the waves are fresh, the living is large and the lifestyle is relaxed. Sounds like a perfect holiday package all in one.
