Group Boarding

We’re always looking for new ways to improve your journey, which is why we’re introducing a smoother and faster boarding experience. 

About group boarding

Group Boarding is now in effect for all flights across the Qantas and QantasLink networks. This way of boarding allocates every passenger into different boarding groups dependent on their seat location and Qantas Frequent Flyer status. Each group will be called separately to board through a designated lane, to help reduce congestion at the gate and create a smoother boarding experience for everyone.

Steps for boarding

Once you have arrived at the airport, follow these three simple steps.

Locate your designated boarding group on your boarding pass.

Arrive at the gate on time for boarding and watch and listen for your group to be called.

When your group is called, proceed to your designated lane.

How to locate your boarding group

Your designated group number is displayed under the heading ‘Group’ at the bottom of your boarding pass.

Yes, customers who are eligible for priority boarding will be assigned to group First (1ST), 1 or 2 when travelling internationally, or group 1 or 2 when travelling domestically.  Splitting priority boarding into smaller groups allows for an improved consistent experience for everyone.

Priority group First (1ST) - First cabin

Priority Group 1 - Business cabin and Frequent Flyers who hold Qantas Platinum One, Qantas Platinum status or oneworld Emerald status, regardless of their travel class.

Priority Group 2 - Premium Economy cabin and Frequent Flyers who hold Qantas Gold or oneworld Sapphire status regardless of travel their class.

Your assigned boarding group will be displayed on your boarding pass after you have completed check-in.

We’ll let you know when it’s time for your group to board via our gate announcements and dynamic signage. Please remain seated and listen for your group to be called.

There are different variations of the boarding sequence based on aircraft type. Most flights will board in a consecutive order.

Customers travelling together and in the same booking will be allocated the same group number, determined based on either their seating location or the highest Frequent Flyer status held in the booking.

When you are travelling internationally with an infant under the age of two, you will be given the opportunity to board early if you would prefer to. We recommend arriving at the gate approximately 10-15 minutes prior to boarding if you would like additional time to settle into your seat.

Otherwise, when boarding begins, please wait for the group on your boarding pass to be called.

If you are travelling with children aged two years and above, please board when your allocated group on your boarding pass is called.  

No, this new boarding process doesn’t change anything about your allocated seat or cabin.

If a boarding group number isn’t displayed on your boarding pass and group boarding is in operation, please board with the last group.
