Travelling has changed, and you may need to do a little more planning and preparation before take-off. Ensure you check and comply with all airline and government travel requirements before arriving at the airport.

Travel requirements

Before booking and before departure, ensure you check the latest CanadianOpens external site in a new window and AustralianOpens external site government conditions for travel, including any applicable Australian State Government restrictions and requirements, which may include mandatory travel and health declarations, vaccinations, use of face masks, and immigration and entry requirements (which may include renewing your passport, or applying for a visa), or you could be denied entry. This information is subject to change and we recommend you check these websites frequently for any updates.

Some countries have restrictions around transiting. If you're transiting via another country or onto another international flight, ensure you check the requirements of your transiting and destination country to ensure their Government allows you to transit.

If your itinerary includes travel with another airline, or Qantas codeshare flights which are operated by another airline on their aircraft, you'll need to contact them directly to understand and meet their requirements.

You're not permitted to travel to Canada if you've had COVID-19 within the past 10 days or have reason to suspect you've had COVID-19 (such as developing symptoms, or being in close contact of someone who was positive). When checking in at the airport you may be required to undergo a health screening. If you do have symptoms, you must have a medical certificate indicating these symptoms are not related to COVID-19 or a valid negative test result.

If you're fully vaccinated

The Canadian Government currently allows fully vaccinated passengers regardless of citizenship (including Australian Citizens) to travel to Canada.

Before departure you'll need to:

On arrival:

  • You may be selected , for on-arrival testing which will be completed outside of the airport:
    • Either via an in-person appointment at select testing provider locations and pharmacies, or
    • A virtual appointment for a self-swab test. 

If you're not fully vaccinated

Foreign nationals who don't qualify as fully vaccinated will only be allowed to enter Canada in specific circumstances (some exceptions for children and other exemptions apply). If approved to travel:

  • All unvaccinated travellers 5 years of age and older (unless exempt) must provide proof of a valid COVID-19 test resultOpens external site in a new window. This means a molecular test (such as PCR test) taken within 72 hours before departure, or a professionally administered or supervised Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) taken no more than 1 calendar day before departure. Unvaccinated travellers under 12 who are travelling with their fully vaccinated parent, step parent, guardian, or tutor do not need to provide a pre-departure test.
  • Use ArriveCANOpens external site in a new window to digitally submit required travel and contact information (unless exempt). Unvaccinated travellers must provide a suitable quarantine planOpens external site in a new window.
  • Unvaccinated travellers, including younger travellers (aged 5 and older), will be subject to mandatory on-arrival testing and will continue to be required to test on Day 8 and quarantine for 14 days. We recommend you pre-register for on-arrival testsOpens external site in a new window prior to landing in Canada to avoid lengthy lines and processing delays.
  • Unvaccinated foreign nationals with onward domestic travel, are permitted to complete their journey as long as the domestic connection is within 24 hours of arrival. You'll need to provide proof of continuous travel (same 24-hour period as your international inbound flight), you will need to provide your boarding pass (from your inbound journey).


If you cannot be vaccinated for approved medical reasons, you'll need to submit your exemption documents to us prior to departure, and you may be required to show evidence of a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test result at the airport.

Applying for clearance to travel

If you're unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons or you return a positive pre-departure COVID-19 test result, you may still be able to travel with us in some circumstances:

  • Vaccination exemptions: You can request a vaccination exemption due to a medical condition that prevents you from being vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine. You'll also be required to show proof of a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test when you check-in.
  • Prior positive medical clearance: If you've previously had a COVID-19 infection, you may be able to apply for medical clearance based on a past positive infection, provided you're no longer infectious and don’t have any symptoms. Check the government requirements to see if they permit exceptions for past positive infections, for any countries you're travelling to or transiting through, before submitting your request to us.
