Visiting from London (Heathrow) to Surabaya

Surabaya mountains and lake

Indonesia’s second-largest city, Surabaya has the feel of a major city. Rich in culture, nature and history, there’s more to Surabaya than mega shopping malls and office buildings. Surabaya is also home to beautiful colonial buildings, one of Indonesia’s largest Chinatowns and the idyllic beaches of Madura island. Be sure to visit the house of Sampoerna Museum, the iconic Majapahit Hotel and Sunan Ampel Mosque, Indonesia’s third-oldest mosque. There is delicious local Indonesian cuisine to try from duck fried rice, tofu in peanut sauce and local fruits. It’s a fascinating city with plenty of things to see and do, minus the traffic.

When to visit

Surabaya has a tropical wet and dry climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The city's wet season runs from October through May, while the dry season runs from June to September. The city has a consistent temperature throughout the year with an average high of around 31°C and average low around 23°C. Like most Indonesian cities, its sunny year round, humid and the during the wet season only rains for a few hours. The best time to visit is during the dry season to take in the city sights and between May and June when the shopping malls have their annual sales.
