Sustainability at Qantas

Protecting the future of travel

Whether in the air or on the ground, we’re committed to minimising our environmental impact at every step.

At Qantas, we recognise that climate change is a significant issue for the aviation industry. That’s why we’re committed to reducing our carbon emissions by 25% by 2030 (from 2019 levels) and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. By creating one of Australia’s largest carbon offsetting programs, minimising waste and single use plastics, and investing in more sustainable aircraft and aviation fuel, we’re working towards a brighter future of travel.

Waste reduction

No Title No Description

The Qantas Group’s Climate Action Plan outlines our interim targets to achieve net zero by 2050, including zero general waste to landfill by 2030.

Our waste reduction roadmap will see us work towards eliminating waste in three phases:

  1. Continuing to work with our suppliers to access innovative products that reduce waste.
  2. Removing single-use plastics across our supply chain and operations.
  3. Developing an onshore operation that will be completely free from general waste to landfill by 2030.

Watch the video to find out more about our waste reduction efforts and how they will help us achieve our sustainability targets.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

No Title No Description

The development and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is central to achieving our goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

In June 2022, the Qantas Group and Airbus signed the Australian SAF Partnership, seeing an investment of up to US$200 million to accelerate the establishment of Australia’s first SAF industry. In addition to this, in November 2022, we launched Australia’s first coalition program to help decarbonise aviation through sustainable fuel.

Learn more about the Fly Carbon Neutral program Plane flying over forest

With our Fly Carbon Neutral program, we’ve done the hard work for you.

We’ve calculated the emissions for each route we fly, so when you book on qantas.com or the Qantas App, you can easily ‘tick-the-box’ when making your booking to offset your share and help support projects that affect real change.

The Group continues to focus on Australian projects as part of our offset portfolio, particularly those that support positive and social outcomes for Indigenous and regional communities. All carbon offset projects sourced by the Group are subject to several layers of scrutiny and strict standards from global accredited registries as well as the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Regulator.
