Qantas Apprenticeship Program

Qantas Engineering offers a variety of exciting apprenticeships in aircraft maintenance and other trades. We'll offer you the opportunity to train and gain experience in a world class organisation with first class facilities, and become a qualified and highly trained tradesperson.

We offer a variety of apprenticeships at our Brisbane and other airport maintenance facilities. Opportunities, including which trades are available, differ from year to year.

It's important to familiarise yourself with our apprenticeships and recruitment process as you'll only be able to apply for one trade (exceptions may apply from time to time). Spend a few minutes reading the information below to ensure you make the right decision with your application.

Are you someone who enjoys working with electronics, scientifically minded or enjoys creating devices that rely on electronic energy to operate? As an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) Avionics - you will be responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance and overhaul of the electronic components of an aircraft. These include:

• electrical power systems
• aircraft Instrument systems
• autopilot systems
• navigation systems
• communication systems
• general electrical systems
• general indicating systems
• associated electronic systems.

Perhaps you are someone who is mechanically minded and fascinated by how and why things move. You might enjoy building or restoring mechanical devices or are mathematically minded with an interest in physics. As an AME Mechanical you will be responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance and overhaul of the mechanical components of an aircraft. These include:

• aircraft engine systems
• aircraft structures
• landing gears, wheels and brakes systems
• hydraulic/pneumatic systems
• flight control systems
• environment control systems.

Do you want to be involved in a design and craft role where you are designing and building things from scratch? The Structures trade is highly specialised involving the use of high tech materials and processes. This includes the manufacture, repair and modification of aircraft sheet and metal composites including fibreglass and carbon fibre materials.

We offer limited apprenticeships within the following non-aircraft trades:

• surface re-finishing; preparing and painting aircraft and components using approved paints and solvents as per industry standards
  
• trimmer; repairing and manufacturing soft furnishings fitted throughout the aircraft including seat covers, curtains, floor coverings
  
• signs and graphics; design, manufacture and apply/install indoor and outdoor signage in a variety of ways.
  

There are minimum entry level requirements that need to be considered before making your application to join the Qantas Engineering Apprenticeship program. You must:

• be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident (New Zealand Citizens with a minimum of 6 months residency in Australia may apply for Sydney and Brisbane based Trades only); 
• be at least 15 years of age or older at time of employment; 
• have completed a minimum of Year 10 or equivalent; 
• pass a Federal Police criminal history check to establish your eligibility to hold an ASIC (Aviation Security Identification Card); 
• pass a pre-employment medical examination; and
• be able to work a 7 day rotating shift roster which covers a 24 hour schedule.
  

For Avionics/Mechanical/Structures apprenticeships ideally candidates will also have completed a Certificate IV in Aeroskills at a recognised training provider such as Aviation Australia.

We pride ourselves on conducting a fair, equitable, transparent and accurate recruitment process in order to recruit the best candidates. To achieve this, we conduct an extensive and thorough screening and selection process. Below is an outline of what to expect:

• Behavioural screening assessment (online).
• Technical competency screening assessment (online testing) which will test your dependability, safety, mathematical, numerical, inductive and mechanical aptitude.
  
• Assessment Centre or Workplace Assessment.
• Face-to-face interview.
• Security checks.
• Medical tests, including alcohol and drug testing.
• Offer.

An apprenticeship offers you the ability to work for a world-class organisation while training to achieve a nationally recognised qualification in the Aerospace Industry.

Apprentices in some trade streams attend the applicable TAFE College and receive instruction in the theoretical aspects of the trade. TAFE attendance can be  either one day per week or in a block release pattern of days or weeks in succession, and you'll be paid while attending.

Our apprentices move through the Engineering business in areas relevant to the trade being undertaken, and are trained to develop the practical skills and knowledge required. Practical training at the workplace may involve shift work.

Once your comprehensive training and apprenticeship is complete, you'll be exposed to a variety of career and development options within Qantas Engineering and the wider Qantas Group.
