Bursting with fresh flavours, friendly locals and spectacular, jaw-dropping scenery, there’s plenty to see and do in and around Devonport.
A great place to start is at the Mersey Bluff Lighthouse, with its candy-striped facade offering a striking contrast to the coastal views below. Take a ride on the historic Don River Railway or browse the collection at the Devonport Regional Art Gallery. Don’t miss the Bass Strait Maritime Centre to learn about the natural history of the Bass Strait and its islands.
For a relaxing afternoon, sip a cool climate wine at the Ghost Rock Vineyard cellar-door or at Southern Wild Distillery with their aptly named Mountain, Meadow or Ocean gins. The Devonport event calendar runs right through the year – rug in if you’re visiting during the winter months, and sway to the rhythm of the Devonport Jazz Festival, held annually.
About an hour and a half drive from Devonport along the scenic coastline of Highway 1, you’ll come to Stanley. Known for ‘The Nut’, a sheer sided bluff rising from the water’s edge, which you can climb by either walking or chairlift for scenic 360 degree views, Stanley encompasses a rich history along with an abundance of fresh seafood perfect for a day trip or short stay. Drop in to the popular Stanley Hotel or sample the fresh fish and chips at Hursey Seafoods.
