Plan and book ahead

Even though we offer generous checked baggage allowances, we understand that sometimes you might need to bring a bit more with you. Here's how to save on additional baggage and avoid unexpected fees.

Confirm your allowance

Find out what your checked baggage allowance is on your flight.

This can depend on things like your route, and Qantas Frequent Flyer status.

Need extra? Check the cost

The cost of pre-purchased additional baggage depends on where you're flying to, your Qantas Frequent Flyer tier and the cabin you're travelling in.

Purchase ahead of your flight

You can pre-purchase additional baggage online using Qantas Points or cash when booking your flight, or up to three hours before your flight departs in Manage booking.#points

Avoid heavy charges

No matter what your allowance is and whether you’ve purchased additional baggage, no single item can exceed 32kgs (70lb).

If you have any piece of baggage over 23kgs (50lbs), you may also have to pay a heavy charge at the airport depending on your allowance.

Things to know about additional baggage

  • No single piece of baggage can exceed 32kgs (70lb), and any piece over 23kgs (50lbs) may incur a heavy charge at the airport.

  • If a single piece of luggage is over the maximum weight for your flight, you may need to pay a heavy charge at the airport. Learn more about heavy charges.

  • If there’s not enough space available for all the excess or pre-purchased baggage on your aircraft, your bag may be loaded on an alternative flight to your destination.

  • If you're flying on a Qantas codeshare flight or with another airline, check with the operating carrier to see if you can pre-purchase additional baggage.

  • If we can’t tell whether your ticket includes checked baggage by weight or by number of pieces, any additional baggage you buy will be charged by weight. This can happen with tickets issued by some third-party suppliers.

Excess and heavy baggage charges at the airport

Avoiding extra charges

When you get to the airport to check in, if your baggage exceeds the weight or total number of pieces that’s included in your checked allowance, you’ll need to pay an excess baggage or heavy charge.

The cost of these is more than the cost of pre-purchasing additional baggage before your flight, so it pays to plan ahead.

When do excess and heavy baggage charges apply?

Airport excess baggage and/or heavy charges will apply if your checked baggage at the airport exceeds:

  • your included baggage allowance; or

  • your Frequent Flyer tier allowance; or

  • the amount of additional baggage you’ve pre-purchased.

The following charges are for Qantas operated flights, and vary depending on your destination.#d-charges

A heavy charge will also apply at the airport for any single piece of baggage that exceeds the weight specified in your checked baggage allowance.
